An Introduction to the Organ Pipe Ensemble (2017)
for 8-channel surround speaker array
This piece was Jake’s first exploration of how decoupled organ pipes could be repurposed to create new music. He recorded a large collection of organ pipes individually inside a Wesleyan chapel in Whitby, North Yorkshire, exploring the sonic capabilities of each type of pipe (bourdon, principal rank, reeded and others) using a variety of performance techniques. These recordings were then used as sound materials for An Introduction to…, where a sense of a virtual “acoustic” performance—the pipes distributed across an ensemble of players surrounding the audience—was created by arranging the recordings in time and space while avoiding any other sonic manipulation.
